Lived experience became the design question: what happens before the drink?
Matt Howery is building EMERGE 8 around a pattern he knows personally—the way alcohol can become a response to unresolved emotion, isolation, shame, anger, and relationship stress.
Recovery became more practical when the emotional pattern became visible.
Matt has described his own drinking pattern as emotional rather than simply habitual: sitting alone, feeling sorry for himself, letting anger or pain build, and using alcohol as the response. That cycle could escalate into blackout behavior and damage the people closest to him.
EMERGE 8 turns that lived experience into a structured question for participants: what is happening in the room, the mood, the story, and the body before alcohol becomes the next move?
The program is designed to combine lived-experience credibility with structured curriculum, professional referral boundaries, measurable delivery, and continued credential development.

Matt’s stated philosophy is that underserved participants should not be priced out of support. The program therefore aims to use institutional funding, sponsorships, and grants to subsidize community access while still requiring real participant commitment.
The standard
Direct, grounded, credible, compassionate, and accountable. No inflated promises. No clinical claims without the structure to support them. No hiding behind inspiration when participants need an execution plan.
Lived experience is the starting point—not the limit.
Matt has discussed pursuing alcohol and drug counselor credentialing. EMERGE 8 is intentionally designed so the public program can remain within recovery education and support boundaries while clinical review, qualified supervision, and referral relationships are added where required.
